Health Supplements & Antioxidants
Application
  • Dietary Supplements: Formulations targeting cardiovascular, joint, and immune system health.
  • Functional Foods: Natural antioxidant additives to extend the shelf life and nutritional value of packaged foods.
Description

Hemp hulls, often removed during the dehulling process of hemp seeds, are a rich source of polyphenols, flavonoids, and potent antioxidants. This project investigates upcycling these hulls to extract bioactive compounds that offer significant anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective benefits, transforming an agricultural processing waste into premium health ingredients.

Pathway Description:

The hemp hulls undergo supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using CO2 to isolate the sensitive bioactive compounds without the use of harsh, toxic chemical solvents. The resulting extracts are purified, concentrated, and micro-encapsulated to create highly bioavailable ingredients for health capsules and powders.

Hydrogen fuel from agricultural waste such as sugarcane bagasse and hemp husks

Date: 24 Mar 2024
Industry: Renewable Energy
Plant Name:
Hemp, Sugarcane
Part of Plant:
Process waste/Secondary residue, Shells/Husk
End Products
Energy Products
Green Hydrogen Fuel
Application
  • Transportation: Clean energy source for zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
  • Industrial Energy: Decarbonized fuel alternative for heavy manufacturing and chemical synthesis.
Description

Producing green hydrogen typically requires energy-intensive water electrolysis. This initiative explores a highly efficient alternative pathway using mixed lignocellulosic biomass (hemp husks and sugarcane bagasse). By leveraging this abundant agricultural waste, the process produces sustainable bio-hydrogen, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and production costs compared to fossil-fuel-derived hydrogen.

Pathway Description:

The mixed biomass undergoes pre-treatment to break down the lignin barrier. It is then subjected to high-temperature supercritical water gasification (SCWG), directly converting the wet biomass into a hydrogen-rich syngas. The gas is then processed through pressure swing adsorption (PSA) membranes to extract high-purity hydrogen gas.

Hemp Hulls based Gut Health Products

Date: 05 May 2024
Industry: Dietary Supplements
Plant Name:
Hemp
Part of Plant:
Hulls
End Products
Nutritional Products
Dietary Fiber & Prebiotics
Application
  • Digestive Health: Daily fiber supplements and prebiotic powders to support a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Baking & Foods: Fortification of baked goods, smoothies, and protein bars with high-quality insoluble fiber.
Description

Hemp hulls are naturally packed with exceptionally high levels of insoluble dietary fiber and essential trace minerals. This project focuses on upcycling the tough outer shell of the hemp seed into natural prebiotic dietary supplements. The high fiber content promotes healthy gut flora, improves digestion, and helps regulate blood sugar levels, providing a sustainable alternative to synthetic fiber additives.

Pathway Description:

The raw hemp hulls are thoroughly cleaned, steam-sterilized, and subjected to ultra-fine mechanical milling. This process reduces the particle size to improve palatability and gastrointestinal tolerance. The micronized powder is then blended with other natural prebiotics or packaged directly as a functional gut-health supplement.
